"Jonathan William Coulton, the Colchester Kid"

Does anyone know a bigger microstar to come out of Colchester, Connecticut than my man JC? He's the only person alive who gets a shout-out on Colchester's Wikipedia page. [ED: My Snyder cousins Jane (high-level exec at Aetna until her recent resignation) and Lynn (top-shelf physical therapist and academician) might've had a case if they had better PR, but JC clearly gets more votes on the intertubes.]

The latest evidence of his huge microstardom was an appearance in Seattle at the Penny Arcade Expo (a.k.a. PAX). It was his first solo performance in front of thousands of people (though he does have legions of fans), and he messed up a chord 2 minutes and 30 seconds into one of his most popular songs (Re: Your Brains). He handled it like a man and got more applause for fucking up, or maybe for admitting it, than I've ever had in my life. Watch the video here.

If you haven't yet listened to Jonathan's songs, you really should. He recently added a primer for those unfamiliar with his brilliance. I love 'em all, but my favorites are in the "sweet songs" section at the end.

So is there a point to all this fawning over JoCo? Glad you asked -- he's playing a show tomorrow, Friday, 8/31, at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA (my old stomping grounds). There's a write-up about him in the Washington Post Express. The end of the story says that he's playing on Saturday, but then gives the correct day (Friday).

"I will do my best to teach them, about life and what it's worth, I just hope that I can keep them from destroying the Earth."

Waiting until the things that make me weak and strange get engineered away....

Well, maybe just the things that make me weak.

Strangely,
Keith
