Patriot (Act) Games

Y'all ain't never gonna believe this... From a story in the Washington Post, a recently released internal FBI audit "detailed widespread abuse of the FBI's authority to seize personal details about tens of thousands of people without court oversight through the use of national security letters."

And what emboldened all those FBI agents to act "without a subpoena, without an emergency or even without an investigative case"? Why, the Patriot Act, of course.

It's so bad that even Attorney General Gonzales has admitted that the FBI broke the law. For those of you who haven't been following along at home, he's the guy who advised Bush that torture isn't what it used to be and that the Geneva convention was really more of a anachronism now that we're the ones doing the torturing. For *him* to turn on the FBI... yikes.

I have long contended that the Patriot Act is a grossly misnamed bit of legislative junk, and now the seagulls are coming home to roost.

Know that you can make a difference. Write to your Representative, write to your Senators, and let them know what you think about the FBI spying on Americans without due process.

Be careful out there....
