Hot Topic Is NOT Punk Rock

So I've been over at the new house the past few days, and my only entertainment is good ol' FM radio. With my iPod, laptop, CDs, vinyl, cassettes, 8-tracks, etc., the frequency of my radio listening is low. When I do tune in, the frequency of choice is 105.3 -- Live 105. You can listen online if you don't have a radio....

Anyhoo, listening over the past couple days, my ear was caught by the heavy rotation on "Hot Topic Is NOT Punk Rock" by MC Lars. It's available on iTunes for purchase, or you can just check out the MC Lars page on MySpace. Among his influences listed on MySpace are Public Enemy and "Weird Al" Yankovic. A man after my own heart. YMMV.

[ed: as it turns out, MC Lars just graduated from Stanford University in Palo Alto, the city to which we are moving next week, where we'll be less than half a mile from campus.]

I just bought the pre-release of "The Graduate" on iTunes and am listening to it now. I knew that I would like "Download This Song" and "Hot Topic Is NOT Punk Rock" but the upside surprise was "21 Concepts (But a Hit Ain't One)" -- a send-up of Jay-Z's "99 Problems (But the Bitch Ain't One)" from the "Black Album," which was artfully mashed up with The Beatles "White Album" by DJ Danger Mouse to form the "Grey Album."

Speaking of DJ Danger Mouse, he produced the Gorillaz "Demon Days" LP. Mars Sigler loves that stuff.

Continuing with DJ Danger Mouse, he and MF Doom have released "Danger Doom" on Epitaph with heavy collaboration from Cartoon Central's Adult Swim. [ed: shout-outs to Brak and Carl]. Oh yeah, I bought that on iTunes, too.

Speaking of which, please indulge me while I call out the most musically savvy cat I know... TRACY -- you aren't just musically savvy, you're technologically savvy, too... why, why are you not using iTunes? If you're too slow on it, Mary, Paris, and Mars will put you to shame. I love the vinyl, too, but seriously, you haven't downloaded anything from iTunes? I could understand if you were all peer-to-peer or something, but you need to get your digital act in order. ;-)

For those who aren't down with Tracy's musical prowess, dig it at http://imheavyduty.com. He'll come around on digital music any day now.

Shannon... are you out there? MKKA, let me know what's up.
