Go Nutty Top Five Movies for 2004 (in no particular order)

Garden State
Zach Braff and Natalie Portman co-starred in this hip, quirky, romantic comedy which Braff also wrote and directed. The film features an excellent soundtrack, with great pacing and strong performances from the entire cast. It's not your usual romantic comedy, though, with some decidedly dark elements.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Did someone mention darkness? Jim Carrey stars in his darkest role since Cable Guy. This time there's no mugging or impressions, just great acting. Kate Winslet co-stars with an excellent performance that's par for the course for her. Written by Charlie Kaufman, the genius behind "Being John Malkovich" and "Adaptation," Eternal Sunshine will make you forget your troubles.

Shaun of the Dead
Shaun is a guy who has troubles with a capital "Z" -- as in zombies. This is another romantic comedy with a decidedly offbeat slant. Shaun (writer and star Simon Pegg) is a loser in a dead-end job who finally finds some spine when there's a massive zombie outbreak. The cast will be familiar to UK viewers, but will likely be unknown to the US audience. Either way, it's brillant.

Dodgeball (A True Underdog Story)
The most mainstream of the five, Dodgeball features a strong cast of reliably funny folks like Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, and Stephen Root. Special props to Gary Cole and Jason Bateman for hilarious performances as dodgeball play-by-play announcer Cotton McKnight and color commentator Pepper Brooks.

Napoleon Dynamite
Written and directed by Jared Hess, this is the story of a misfit who's mostly happy with his different drummer. Hess is a talented guy... a combination of Wes Anderson and John Hughes. Jon Heder is incredibly well-cast as Napoleon Dynamite, who endures a staggering amount of disrespect while maintaining an odd sort of self-respect. Lucky.
