The gubernatorial recall in California has reached new heights in political absurdity. Last night Arnold Schwarzenegger officially announced his candidacyon the Tonight Show. His announcement created a staggering number of headlines riffing on the Terminator, Total Recall, and Running Man puns. Personally, I'm more of a Predator fan, but it would be nice to see some more originality with the headlines, maybe working in Raw Deal or True Lies. There have been a few enterprising uses of End of Days, which is apropos given the anarchic field of candidates for the next governor of California, the fifth-largest economy in the world. Maybe this is what it's like living in Italy.
Seriously people, I'm no big fan of Gray Davis (Peter Camejo got my vote in the last election), but this recall stuff has train wreck written all over it. While there have been times that I considered how great it would be if we could recall W, it generally doesn't seem like a good idea to remove elected executives mid-term just because a small percentage of registered voters sign a petition to put it to a vote. Even the process is whack... if 49% of voters were against a recall (implicitly endorsing Davis, or at least the continuation of his current term) and 51% were for the recall, we might end up with a governor who could conceivably command less than 20% of the vote, given the large number of candidates in the field.
While we're on the subject of politics, here's a hot question these days -- who isHoward Dean? My answer is that he may be the only democrat who has a chance of beating W. And isn't that really what we all want?
