Growing up, the keening alarm of the smoke detector was a staple of Thanksgiving dinner. Luckily, it was always just the crescent rolls burning. This year, Underwriters Laboratories (the people who put those UL stickers on appliances certifying their safety) has issued a warning about deep-fat turkey fryers. It seems that can get all medieval on your ass, bursting into unstoppable fireballs of grease and/or dumping gallons of hot oil on your family in a deep-fat frying flood. Your mileage may vary.
They even have a turkey fryer movie capturing the potential destruction in mpeg format. The movie is 13 megs, so it may take a while to download if you don't have a high-speed connection, but it's a great feature for all you pyros out there - almost enough to make you want to go out and get one of them for yourself.
