It's the oil, stupid.

A couple days ago The New York Times ran an insightful op-ed piece entitled "Drowning Freedom in Oil." It looks at the relationship between the U.S. dependence on oil, and the struggle to promote democracy in the Middle East. The article rightly calls the Bush administration to task for not so much as mentioning our dependence on oil as a factor contributing to unrest in the Middle East. Instead, they waste our time and money (not to mention insulting our intelligence) by running stupid terrorist drug dealer ads during the Super Bowl. Either the Bush administration is too stupid to realize that much of the money that supports terrorism comes from oil, or they're too dishonest to engage the public in an open dialog about it. Either way, that's just bad news.

(They wouldn't avoid talking about it because of their extensive ties to oil, would they?)

Get real -- talk to your kids about oil.
