A new gig for the kid

As many of you know, I have been blissfully unemployed for the past nine months or so, during which time I've babbled here at length. Today I accepted a job as Information Designer at Financial Engines, so starting on Monday I'll have less time for this nonsense. Part of me will miss having so much free time, but that's more than offset by the feeling of larger purpose (not to mention the larger paycheck).

Financial Engines, for those who don't know, provides online financial advice to help people plan for and manage major financial goals like retirement. It was founded in 1996 by Nobel laureate Bill Sharpe. He's a wicked smaht economist, responsible for stuff like the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and the Sharpe Ratio.

With Financial Engines, people enter their information online, and they receive objective financial advice based on the investment thinking of Bill and his team of econogeeks. My job is to help make it easy for people to enter information and receive their advice. It's a position that serves a good purpose, and it's a nice match for my design skills and financial experience. I like the job, I like the company, and I'm really excited about the opportunity. Hell, I even have a cool boss. Things are good.

Though having a job will seriously deplete my free time reserves, I will continue to write as often as possible. You've been warned.
