The winners of the 2002 Webby Awards have been announced, and as usual there are some great sites in the roster. (Also as usual, some excellent sites weren't nominated, and I don't agree with some of the choices for winners.)
Google won best practices, which is only fair and just given how much booty they kick. The Onion won again for best humor site, which is also cool, though I did think that Legodeath - A Museum of Horrors was quite clever (it reminded me very much of Lego Porn). SatireWire is another nominee that deserves a mention. They aren't quite The Onion, but they're still damn funny.
Yahoo! Finance won the Finance category, which isn't suprising given its popularity, but I think that Financial Engines got jobbed. While I'm griping about the Finance category, let me say that it seems lame that The Motley Fool didn't even garner a nomination this year. Granted, the lustre on the Fool isn't what it was once, but you're telling me that it's not better than the 10k Wizard? Please.
Proving that too much is never enough, The Osbournes won for best TV site. Don't get me wrong, I loves me some Ozzy, and the show is really funny, but man-oh-man am I starting to tire of all the media coverage. I guess it's part of the time-honored media tradition of taking really smart, funny, offbeat television and hyping the hoo-ha out of it (Simpsons, Beavis & Butthead, South Park, etc.). It can only be a matter of time before we see people wearing "Osbournes" t-shirts. Let's just hope that they don't make plush pull-string toys out of the whole Osbourne clan.
Finally, Ze's site won the People's Voice award for best personal site. I didn't think I had ever been there, but then realized that a friend had sent a link to his How to Dance page a few years ago. Some of the little vignettes on the site are quite funny. I especially enjoyed the Naughty Bird segment. It's a bit like Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, who also has a good site... for me to poop on!
