Regular readers will remember that a few weeks ago I sent a letter about zero tolerance legislation to my two Virginia state representatives. Well, I received written replies from both of them, with mixed results. Senator Ticer wrote a nice letter that was courteous, considered, and complementary of my framing of the issue. Furthermore, she stated her opinion that zero tolerance should not replace good judgement, and explained that while she thought it was a worthwhile goal that it wouldn't likely be revisited again this session of the General Assembly.
Delegate Van Landingham on the other hand, wrote an amazingly bad note which didn't give me the slightest impression that she had read more than my subject line. The letter was all of three sentences, which informed me that:
She didn't get to vote on the ZT issue
[I know, because it never got out of committee]
The Speaker took her off the House Education Committee two years ago
[something else of which I was already aware]
That the bills to which I referred never made it out of committee
[something which I not only knew, but explicitly stated in the second paragraph of my note].
Well, at least this will make it easier to fill out future ballots.
