You know you'll go blind if you keep doing that! (Part 2)
Oh, come on! I'm talking about watching too much TV!
It's been said that television is the opium of the masses, riffing on Marx's famous slam on religion. Scientific American has published a story that suggests that television may actually share the addictive traits of opiates:
"spending a great deal of time using the substance; using it more often than one intends; thinking about reducing use or making repeated unsuccessful efforts to reduce use; giving up important social, family or occupational activities to use it; and reporting withdrawal symptoms when one stops using it."
The article is an interesting one, and while I don't agree with all the hypotheses presented, it did hit on some valid stuff. In particular, the notion of television preying on our orienting reflex. How many times have you been going about your business and found yourself unconsciously and inexplicably drawn to the dancing images on a television?
