RageBoy posted a link to a cool petition that seeks to voice the opinion that "we can, as we have in the past, in times of war and of peace, reconcile the requirements of security with the demands of liberty." They have 10 points to the petition and they're much more eloquent than I can hope to be, so let me just encourage you to go check it out. In case you're interested, here's what I wrote in the comment field when I signed the petition:
"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
- Benjamin Franklin
This is a difficult time for America. With the terrible events of 9.11, our nation received a wakeup call that we're not invulnerable to attack. There are many natural reactions to such things, among which is a strong desire to make things safe. I applaud the swift action of the President, Congress, and the U.S. military and intelligence communities. At the same time, I would like to caution against any undue restrictions on the liberties of American citizens. Let us not help terrorists destroy those freedoms which make America a shining beacon of democracy. Let us be measured in our actions at home, and let common sense, not fear, be our guide.
I hear stories that make me wonder if fear has caused us to make irrational decisions - tales of people not being let on planes because they have nail clippers. I really wonder who that's really protecting us against. Who is the super-ninja is who can kill with a pair of nail clippers? (Seriously, if someone can kill with nail clippers, they can probably mess you up pretty bad barehanded, or by swinging a heavy object.)
As you face the difficult legislative and executive challenges that lie ahead, I ask that you remember to protect not only the lives of American citizens, but also their freedom. I wish you strength and courage, and have the utmost confidence that we will prevail.
Sincerely,
Keith Pelczarski
The site automatically sends the ten points, along with your comments, to President Bush and your Senators. If you're concerned about maintaining our freedoms as we fight terrorist threats, I would encourage you to visit defendyourfreedom.org, and sign the petition.
As my wife Kerah says, "Don't mess with the U.S."
